The Gulangyu, Gulang Island or Kulangsu is a pedestrian-only island off the coast of Xiamen, Fujian Province in southerneastern China. It is famous for its varied architecture and multicultural history, was included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017.
Gulangyu has more than 2,000 intact historical buildings, making it one of the best-preserved international settlements in China.
From the middle of the 19th century, along with the spread of Christianity, Western music flooded into Gulangyu Island, blending with the elegant living environment of Gulangyu, creating the music tradition of Gulangyu today.

The island is on China’s list of National Scenic Spots, is classified as a 5A tourist attraction by the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA).
Sunlight Rock, the highest peak on the islet, is the symbol of Xiamen.
National hero Zheng Chenggong once trained the navy here before expelling the Dutch colonialists in 1662 and recovered Taiwan.
The residence on the islet love music very much. With a small population of 10,000 or so, Xiamen has over 600 pianos, ranking first in China in the density of pianos. Hence it is called the land of music and island of pianos.
